Nurturing Talent the Italian Way – Erasmus+ Professional Visit to Piacenza

At the end of April, within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, I had the opportunity to participate in a job shadowing visit at the Liceo Gioia Gymnasium in Piacenza. In this small town near Milan, I witnessed an exemplary model of how thoughtful curriculum development, organically built upon the region's cultural heritage, can sophisticatedly develop students' 21st-century key competencies. 

Flexible Curriculum and Mentor System 

The high school's classical, scientific, and modern foreign language tracks interconnect at several points. Supported by their mentor teachers, students can choose from the subject offerings of various fields of study according to their own interests. 

Professional Exchange and Modern Technology 

Giovanna, the institution's Erasmus coordinator, put together an extremely rich program for me. During my four days there, I was able to attend different types of classes across all year groups. Discussions with the management and educators gave me a comprehensive overview of how the North Italian school system works, as well as the methods aimed at preserving and bringing their rich cultural traditions to life. 

We brainstormed together on transforming school libraries into community spaces. I was also fascinated by the technological possibilities offered by the EU-funded 3D projection room and the immersive learning space. I was delighted to see the youth's deep interest in living and dead languages, European literature, and the arts. 

With the dedicated educators of the school, we are planning future joint projects and long-term professional cooperation with great enthusiasm!
