Ms. Andrea Almádi in Rome
“In early November, I had the opportunity to attend an Erasmus+ course in Rome, a city full of history, culture, and vibrant communities that provided the perfect backdrop for a week of learning. The course, Cultivating Diversity and Inclusion, brought together a very small international group: a teacher from the Netherlands, two social workers from Iceland, and myself. This intimate setting allowed us to work closely, share perspectives openly, and learn from one another’s diverse professional and cultural backgrounds.
Throughout the week, we explored how cultural differences influence communication, learning, and classroom dynamics. The program included a wide range of practical activities and reflective discussions that challenged us to think deeply about our own assumptions and experiences. We examined what often causes misunderstandings between people from different cultures and practiced clear communication strategies that can help prevent these issues in the classroom. One of the most meaningful parts of the course was learning to distinguish between generalizations and stereotypes, an essential skill in supporting students respectfully and fairly.
A significant focus was understanding culture shock and its stages. Through case studies and group work, we discussed how students new to a country or school environment might feel and what teachers can do to guide them through this transition. These conversations were eye-opening, highlighting how much empathy and patience matter in a multicultural setting.
In addition, we tried various interactive tools designed to help students collaborate, share their experiences, and learn from one another. These activities not only made the learning process enjoyable but also demonstrated how cooperation can naturally build cultural awareness.
By the end of the course, I returned with fresh ideas, practical methods, and renewed motivation to create a classroom environment where diversity is valued, differences are celebrated, and every student feels included and supported.” – Andrea Almádi
